Sydney Opera House awarded $120 million for boardwalk and infrastructure upgrades

The New South Wales government has approved a $120 million investment to be spent over four years on the Sydney Opera House. The funding will replace about 150 concrete beams, slabs and piers beneath the northern boardwalk, modernise ageing venue technology and upgrade theatre machinery in the Playhouse, Studio and Drama Theatre.

The upgrade follows a $150 million refurbishment of the Concert Hall completed four years earlier. Outgoing chief executive Louise Herron, who is leaving after 14 years, said the money will “do wonders for the long-term future of a World Heritage masterpiece.” Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the injection will help the venue keep pace with modern visitor and performance expectations. A search for Herron’s replacement is under way, with several senior arts leaders mentioned as possible candidates.
