Sydney Pierre resigns from Labour Party to join opposition
Mauritian Member of Parliament Sydney Pierre, representing the 19th constituency (Stanley/Rose-Hill), has resigned from the Labour Party (PTr) and left the governing majority. Pierre announced his decision to sit on the opposition benches when parliament resumes.
Pierre stated that his decision was driven by diverging views from both the government and the party line, noting that remaining in the majority would be detrimental to both himself and the PTr. This move follows his previous dismissal from his role as junior minister of Tourism after he became the only majority MP to vote against amendments to the National Pensions Act within the finance bill.
His departure increases the number of opposition MPs to seven. Pierre noted that he did not meet with Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Navin Ramgoolam prior to submitting his resignation via email.
