Sydney police investigation into fatal crash killing Constable Mia Lay

Investigators are examining whether excessive speed contributed to a fatal police vehicle crash in Sydney that killed 20-year-old Constable Mia Lay. The incident occurred early Friday morning on Gibbons Street in Redfern while officers were responding to a reported vehicle theft in nearby Glebe.

CCTV footage from a nearby business shows the Volkswagen Tiguan patrol car traveling at high speed with sirens and lights activated before striking a tree. Reports suggest the vehicle may have reached speeds of at least 150km/h during the approximately 100-meter stretch from Redfern Police Station. Constable Lay, who was in the passenger seat, was killed instantly upon impact.

The driver, 24-year-old Constable Brandon Torrisi, sustained minor facial injuries and has been discharged from the hospital, though he has not yet been formally questioned. NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley stated that the investigation will be thorough, noting that while officers may exceed speed limits during emergencies, they must not use unnecessary speed.

Mourners have gathered at the crash site to leave flowers and tributes. Lay’s father, Clem Lay, expressed relief that the driver survived while noting the immense loss his family is experiencing.
