Sydney private schools: Hidden costs exceed tuition fees
Private schools in Sydney, New South Wales, are facing scrutiny over the total cost of education, which extends significantly beyond standard tuition fees. While approximately 20 schools in the region charge more than $45,000 annually for Year 12, families must also account for various additional expenses.
These extra costs include uniforms, which can reach $2,000, annual fee increases averaging 5 per cent, capital levies, application and enrolment fees, as well as costs for camps, excursions, music lessons, and sports.
Furthermore, a “shadow economy” of fundraising exists through giving days, raffles, and social events. For example, Kincoppal’s parents and friends association reported significant donations in 2024, including $15,000 from a Mother’s Day raffle and $12,000 from Father’s Day. Some schools have even provided legal templates to allow alumni to bequeath assets such as property or art collections to the institution.
