Sydney residents report strong chlorine smell in tap water

Residents in several southwest Sydney suburbs, including Spring Farm, Mount Annan, Oran Park, Gregory Hills, Grasmere, and Cobbity, have reported a strong chlorine odor in their tap water. Some community members have linked the water quality to skin rashes and illness, leading some to purchase bottled water instead of using the municipal supply.

Sydney Water has maintained that the water supply remains safe for consumption. The utility provider stated that the noticeable change in taste and odor is due to a disinfectant swap from monochloramine to free chlorine, a move intended to ensure water safety. Corinna Doolan of Sydney Water noted that while the change produces a more prominent smell, chlorine remains an essential component for maintaining safe drinking water.
