Sydney teenager dies following suspected choking during sexual act

Police in New South Wales are investigating the death of a 16-year-old girl in Elanora Heights, located in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Emergency services responded to a welfare check on August 23, where paramedics found the teenager unresponsive. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died on Tuesday night.

It is believed the death resulted from suspected choking during a consensual sexual act with a male peer of the same age. While reports suggest the boy informed police that the girl may have had a seizure during the act, detectives are investigating sexual choking as a possible factor. No arrests or charges have been made at this time.

The incident has prompted discussions regarding sexual safety and the influence of digital media. A 2024 study by the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland involving over 4,700 young Australians found that 57 percent of respondents had experienced strangulation during sex. The study noted that many participants first learned about such practices through pornography, social media, or peer influence.
