Sydney’s Bays West project shortlists six design teams for Glebe Island renewal

Six design teams have been shortlisted for the Bays West project, a major urban renewal initiative aimed at transforming Sydney’s Glebe Island into a residential waterfront precinct. The NSW government plans to relocate existing port operations to facilitate the development of up to 8,500 homes and various public spaces around the White Bay Power Station and the Bays West metro stop.

The 77-hectare site redevelopment is described as the most significant reshaping of the Sydney harbour foreshore since the Barangaroo project. The shortlisted teams were selected from 165 entrants following an international design competition. These teams include prominent names such as Herzog & de Meuron, Silvester Fuller and Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, and Allies and Morrison with Bates Smart.

Shortlisted teams will now prepare urban frameworks based on detailed briefs from the NSW government architect and the Bays West Delivery Authority. The winning scheme and all shortlisted submissions are expected to be presented for public exhibition in early 2027.
