Canada has deported Syed Salman Samani, a former deputy interior minister and spokesperson for the Iranian government. The removal follows a decision by the Federal Court to reject Samani's last-minute appeal to halt his deportation.

Samani, who served as a career politician in Iran from 2007 to 2021, was ordered deported by the Immigration and Refugee Board in 2024. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed his removal, noting he is the second Iranian regime official expelled under a 2022 Canadian policy that bans high-ranking members of the Iranian government from the country.

Federal Court Justice Sébastien Grammond noted that Samani had significant influence over government decisions. The court highlighted that Samani’s former ministry oversaw police forces responsible for widespread human rights abuses and the killing of civilians. Specifically, the court cited Samani’s role in publicly defending the ministry’s conduct during the 2019 “Bloody November” crackdown on protesters.

While Samani argued that he feared harm if returned to Iran, the judge ruled that Canada’s interest in preventing the country from becoming a safe haven for those responsible for systematic human rights violations outweighed his personal concerns.
