Syensqo chemical plant in Spinetta Marengo reports hydrofluoric acid leak
A hydrofluoric acid leak occurred at the Syensqo chemical plant in Spinetta Marengo, Italy, during the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The emergency began around 4:30 or 5:00 AM in the Algofrene department, prompting internal emergency procedures and the involvement of the Alessandria Fire Department to assist with water-based containment systems.
Arpa Piemonte monitored the situation in real-time using local stations and portable instruments. The agency reported that no concentrations of hydrofluoric acid exceeding detectable limits were found in the external areas surrounding the facility. The company declared the internal emergency phase concluded by 6:40 AM.
Local activist group ‘Ce l’ho nel sangue’ has criticized the incident, citing a pattern of recurring emergencies at the former Solvay site. The group is demanding a total halt to the production of hazardous substances and calling for a complete cleanup of the Fraschetta area to address long-standing environmental contamination and the presence of PFAS in the local environment.
