Syilx Okanagan Nation monitors sockeye salmon return to Upper Columbia

The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA), the tribal council of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, is monitoring the return of sockeye salmon to the Upper Columbia River using a network of underwater acoustic monitoring stations.

For six years, the ONA has conducted experiments by releasing salmon fry, smolt, and adults upriver from the Hugh Keenleyside and Brilliant dams near Castlegar. The goal is to encourage salmon to return from the Pacific Ocean to their historic waters in the Canadian reaches of the Columbia River.

Upstream migration remains a significant challenge due to dams in Washington, such as the Wells, Chief Joseph, and Grand Coulee dams. The Grand Coulee dam has blocked Canadian-bound salmon since the 1930s. To combat this, First Nations are employing various methods to restore traditional runs, including the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, which has focused on transporting adult Chinook around dams.
