Pennsylvania to launch database to track expiring affordable housing subsidies

Pennsylvania is launching a searchable database to monitor the supply of affordable housing and track the expiration of rent discount requirements. The initiative, included in a July state budget deal, aims to provide transparency regarding properties subsidized by state and federal programs.

According to the National Housing Preservation Database, more than 9,700 affordable housing units in Pennsylvania are set to lose their affordability restrictions over the next five years. When these requirements expire, property owners may increase rents to market rates or sell the buildings, which could displace current residents.

The measure addresses a lack of consistent tracking across various state agencies, a deficiency noted in a housing plan introduced by Governor Josh Shapiro. The initiative was originally sponsored by State Senators Vincent Hughes and Nikil Saval to prevent local officials from learning about expiring provisions too late to implement solutions.
