Sylvia Plath’s ‘Ariel’ published in Spanish following author’s original intent

The iconic poetry collection ‘Ariel’ by Sylvia Plath is being published in Spanish for the first time according to the original order intended by the author. Published by Galaxia Gutenberg and translated by Jordi Doce, this new edition restores the structure and selection of poems established by Plath before her death in 1963.

Historically, the 1965 publication of ‘Ariel’ was edited by Plath’s husband, poet Ted Hughes. Hughes modified the collection by removing certain poems he deemed too dark or critical of him and adding others written near the time of her death. This new version aims to rectify those changes, including a facsimile of the manuscript, various drafts, and Plath’s notes for the BBC.

The edition features a prologue by Frieda Hughes, the poet and daughter of Plath and Ted Hughes, who explains the differences between the known Hughes edition and this current version. The work remains a significant symbol of Anglo-American confessional poetry and a feminist landmark regarding social expectations and female identity.
