Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram faces calls for dismissal over border security stance
The association ‘Wiara i Czyn’ has formally appealed to the Marshal of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty, to dismiss Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram from her position as the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman). The appeal cites concerns that her stance on the Polish-Belarusian border undermines national security.
The controversy stems from Gregorczyk-Abram’s recent statements, including an interview with Radio ZET, where she affirmed that the Ombudsman’s Office will continue to monitor and respond to reports of individuals seeking asylum at the border. She criticized ‘pushbacks’ and the temporary restrictions on asylum applications, suggesting such actions should be examined for compliance with the Constitution and the Geneva Convention.
Critics, including the National Movement and MP Paweł Usiądek, argue that her approach prioritizes migrant rights over the state's duty to maintain a secure border against pressure from the Belarusian regime. The association’s appeal invokes Article 7 of the Act on the Commissioner for Human Rights, which allows for dismissal if the official is deemed to have violated their oath of office.
