Symbolism and history of traditional papal red shoes

The traditional red shoes worn by Popes, known as pontifical shoes, serve as a symbolic element of Catholic vestments. The color red is intended to represent the blood of the martyrs and the Passion of Christ, signifying the Pope's readiness for ultimate sacrifice rather than luxury.

While the tradition remained largely intact through the papacy of Pope Luciani, it saw various modifications. Pope Paul VI removed gold crosses and buckles, and Pope John Paul II eventually transitioned toward wearing burgundy or dark brown footwear, though he was buried in red leather shoes. Pope Benedict XVI notably reinstated the visible use of red shoes during his pontificate, a move that drew both recognition and criticism, including the derisive nickname ‘Prada Pope’ from some media outlets.

In contrast, the papacy of Pope Francis has seen a shift away from these traditional symbols, moving toward a more simplified style associated with his approach to the Church and the Jubilee celebrations.
