Synagogue in Flores faces eviction amid civil dispute
A judicial dispute over the possession of a synagogue in the Flores neighborhood of Buenos Aires led to police intervention on Monday. The National Civil Court of First Instance No. 99, overseen by Judge Camilo Jorge Almeida Pons, issued an order to evict one group of faithful and grant possession of the property at Helguera 270 to another group involved in a civil litigation.
During the operation, the City Police and Federal Police were deployed to the scene. To avoid immediate conflict and respect religious practices, a judicial officer established a dialogue with those inside the building. An agreement was reached to allow approximately 30 faithful and a rabbi a reasonable amount of time to complete their prayers before the eviction proceedings continued.
While the eviction order was temporarily suspended or delayed to allow for these religious observances, the underlying conflict remains. The property owner has expressed intent to sell the building, while the occupying group continues to resist the move, citing the historical importance of the temple to their community.
