Synap launches Synoptic to protect online exam integrity

Leeds-based technology firm Synap has launched Synoptic, an integrated proctoring solution designed to protect the integrity of online examinations. The tool aims to address growing concerns regarding cheating, particularly through the use of generative AI and wearable technology, which have made misconduct harder to detect.

Unlike traditional third-party proctoring tools that often rely on intrusive continuous surveillance, Synoptic utilizes configurable monitoring, AI-assisted evidence gathering, and clear audit trails. This approach allows institutions, training providers, and professional bodies to adjust security controls based on specific risk levels. The system is designed to function in diverse environments, including regions with limited power or low network bandwidth.

The launch follows calls from Ofqual Chief Regulator Ian Bauckham for exam boards to implement stricter measures against cheating. The need for more robust digital assessment security is underscored by professional organizations, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, which have previously withdrawn remote invigilated exams due to integrity concerns. Synap CEO Dr. James Gupta stated that the goal is to provide technology that institutions can trust while offering a more seamless experience by embedding proctoring directly into the exam lifecycle.
