Synology expands ActiveProtect with cloud recovery capabilities
Synology has released ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, a significant software update for its data protection appliances designed to enhance cloud recovery and cross-platform capabilities. The update expands support to include Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, and Google Workspace, allowing organizations to manage workloads across hybrid infrastructures.
A key feature of the update is cross-platform recovery, which enables backups stored in Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage to be restored directly into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM environments without requiring on-premises hardware as an intermediary. This functionality is intended to simplify disaster recovery and workload migration.
Security enhancements include software-based storage encryption for data at rest. Synology also announced that the upcoming APM 2.1 version will introduce AI/ML-driven anomaly detection and malware scanning capabilities through integrations with third-party antivirus software such as Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and ESET. The update is available at no additional cost for DP-Series appliances.
