Synology introduces storage efficiency and Docker resource management

Synology is introducing new storage management features and addressing resource management for its NAS users. With the release of DSM 7.4, the company is implementing a ‘Storage Efficiency’ function that allows for post-processing data deduplication and compression on traditional hard drive volumes. This feature, previously reserved for high-end All-Flash systems, enables administrators to reclaim disk space by identifying duplicate blocks and compressing data during scheduled windows of low activity. Notably, this function requires the use of Synology-branded hard drives.

In addition to storage efficiency, users managing Docker containers on Synology NAS systems may encounter issues with increasing RAM consumption over time. For applications like Immich, which can become resource-intensive, manual restarts of specific containers via the Container Manager can effectively reclaim several gigabytes of memory. Users can monitor specific resource usage through the Resource Monitor and the Container Manager statistics tab to identify which processes or containers are consuming the most private memory.
