Synopsys signs major AI and custom silicon deals with Amazon and OpenAI

Synopsys has announced two major multi-year strategic agreements with Amazon and OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence into semiconductor design and custom silicon development.

In a deal valued at over $1 billion, Amazon will become a lead customer for Synopsys’ application-optimized silicon intellectual property (IP). This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of Amazon Web Services (AWS) custom chips, including the Graviton, Trainium, and Nitro lines. The partnership will utilize Synopsys’ electronic design automation (EDA) tools and agentic AI to optimize engineering workflows. In a reciprocal arrangement, Synopsys will adopt Amazon EC2, cloud storage, and Amazon Bedrock to scale its own IP and EDA tool development.

Simultaneously, Synopsys and OpenAI are collaborating to develop ‘GPT-Synopsys,’ a specialized AI model designed to work natively within Synopsys’ EDA tools. This model aims to automate complex semiconductor design tasks, such as circuit development and physical layout, by acting as a supervisory controller over traditional design flows. The two companies will operate under a revenue-sharing framework for the deployment of this specialized intelligence.
