Syracuse corruption probe: Nexus operation targets illicit public contract network

The Nexus investigation, coordinated by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Palermo, has uncovered an alleged illicit system involving public contracts in Syracuse, Italy. The probe focuses on the construction and expansion of a migrant workers' hostel in Cassibile, which was funded with approximately 1.67 million euros in EU funds.

Authorities have executed seven precautionary measures against individuals suspected of forming a criminal association. The suspects include a Carabinieri officer, a municipal technician, a former city council vice president, and several entrepreneurs. Charges include corruption, illicit influence peddling, electoral corruption, and the disclosure of official secrets.

Specific measures include one person in prison, two under house arrest, and four economic operators banned from accessing public funds for twelve months. Investigators reportedly discovered a 'pizzino' containing a list of 'friendly' companies intended to influence future contract awards. The investigation suggests that public tenders were used to consolidate political support and distribute economic advantages among a network of politicians, officials, and private interests.
