Syracuse corruption probe: Carabiniere remains silent amid rigged contract investigation

An investigation led by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has uncovered a suspected corruption scheme involving rigged public contracts in the Municipality of Syracuse. Salvatore Luca Strazzulla, a carabiniere arrested on charges of criminal association, corruption, and disclosure of official secrets, has chosen to remain silent during questioning by magistrates.

Investigators allege that Strazzulla acted as a liaison between Concetta Carbone, the Vice President of the City Council currently under house arrest, and the Boscarino family of entrepreneurs. Through the misuse of direct award procedures, the Boscarino family allegedly secured public contracts worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

The probe specifically highlights the expansion of the Cassibile migrant hostel, which received funding from the Pon Legalità program. Allegations include monthly payments made to municipal engineer Michele Dell’Aira for complicity, a monthly stipend for Strazzulla, and €10,000 received by Carbone. Syracuse Mayor Francesco Italia is also under investigation for criminal association and bid-rigging.
