Syria claims foiled Hezbollah plot against Homs oil refinery

Syrian security forces, including the General Intelligence Service and Internal Security Forces, claim to have intercepted a terrorist plot targeting the Homs oil refinery in central Syria. Authorities reported the arrest of two individuals, identified by the initials M S and B Sh, who were allegedly part of a cell affiliated with the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

During the preemptive operation, security forces reportedly seized explosive devices prepared for the attack. The Homs refinery is a critical piece of national infrastructure, serving as one of Syria’s primary fuel processing centers. Currently, it is the only major refinery in the country fully operational, as the Baniyas refinery is undergoing maintenance.

Hezbollah has issued a formal denial, stating it has no operational presence in Syria and is not involved in activities that undermine Syrian stability. The accusations come amid deteriorating relations between Damascus and the group following the 2024 overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, whose government Hezbollah had previously supported during the Syrian civil war.
