During a United Nations Security Council meeting regarding Syria’s post-Assad transition, representatives from Syria, Israel, and Turkiye exchanged accusations regarding military presence on Syrian territory.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, stated that Israeli actions, including air strikes and incursions, pose the greatest threat to Middle East stability. He noted that 44 nations had issued an emergency declaration condemning an Israeli leadership visit to Jabal al-Sheikh on September 9 as a violation of international law.

In response, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon characterized Israel’s presence as a tiny defensive buffer. He redirected focus toward Turkiye, alleging that Ankara intends to expand its military capabilities and control a significant portion of Syrian territory, noting that Turkiye currently maintains 20,000 troops in the region.

Additional reports from the meeting indicate that Syria has begun the destruction of chemical weapons materials from the al-Assad era and has detained a former general accused of suppressing protests.
