Syria advances political integration and signs trade deals with Saudi Arabia

Syria is undergoing significant political and economic shifts following meetings in Damascus. In a major political restructuring, Mazlum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG), has been appointed as an advisor to the Presidency. Additionally, Ilham Ahmed has been appointed as a member of the Syrian Parliament to handle diplomatic affairs.

As part of this transition, the SDG has announced its dissolution as an independent military entity to complete its integration into the Syrian Army. Discussions also addressed the status of the YPJ, which may be integrated into the Ministry of Interior as a specialized organized structure. Furthermore, plans are underway to recognize Kurdish as a second official language in Syria, with a commission tasked with developing Kurdish-language educational materials.

On the economic front, Syria and Saudi Arabia have signed two memorandums of understanding in Damascus to enhance bilateral cooperation. These agreements focus on logistics, railway development, and postal services. The cooperation aims to rehabilitate Syria’s road and rail networks and facilitate trade through expertise sharing and improved transport capacity. Saudi officials expressed commitment to strengthening ties with Syria as part of broader regional economic expansion.
