Syria and Germany Sign Air Transport Deal and Form Joint Economic Committee

Syria and Germany signed a bilateral air transport agreement in Damascus at the Tishreen Palace. The deal establishes a legal framework for resuming direct flights, with Syrian authorities reviewing applications from three German airlines and planning to lift the flight ban on 27 July. The agreement also creates a Syrian‑German Joint Committee to address economic recovery, reconstruction, investment, energy, transport, and refugee matters, aiming to facilitate travel for the Syrian diaspora and boost tourism and trade.

Officials highlighted that the agreement builds on a previous joint statement of intent signed in Berlin on 30 March 2026 and follows Germany’s reopening of its embassy in Damascus in March 2025 after a 13‑year closure. The next steps involve operational arrangements, airline licensing, and coordination between civil aviation authorities of both countries.
