Syria and UNDOF coordinate to monitor Israeli violations
Syrian authorities and the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are working to improve coordination to monitor Israeli violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement in southern Syria. Officials from Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense met with UNDOF leadership in Damascus to discuss mechanisms that would support the mission’s mandate to document military activity and incursions in the Quneitra region.
UN Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone warned that Israeli military operations, including shelling, abductions, and searches, are threatening stability in southern Syria. Cordone urged the international community to provide practical funding and assistance to support Syria’s economic recovery and the needs of the approximately 4 million people who have returned to the country.
Discussions also touched upon the reconstruction of Syrian state institutions and the importance of accountability and transitional justice. Cordone noted that while progress has been made in rebuilding institutions, the ongoing military activity in the south remains a significant threat to regional security and territorial integrity.
