Syria arrests nine former military pilots in Latakia over war crimes

Internal security forces in Latakia, Syria, have arrested nine former military pilots accused of committing war crimes. The group includes three brigadier generals: Manhal Anwar Saleh, Sami Ibrahim Mahmoud, and Ghiyath Ali al-Rahiya. Other detainees include three colonels, one lieutenant colonel, and two captains.

According to security officials, the accused used fixed-wing combat aircraft and military helicopters to conduct air strikes against Syrian populations in various governorates. These operations resulted in civilian casualties, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the displacement of residents.

The arrests are part of a broader effort by the current administration to hold individuals accountable for crimes committed under the former government. A national Transitional Justice Commission has been established to manage these cases. This follows recent actions by authorities, including the arrest of a former army major general and previous death sentences issued in absentia against former leadership.
