Syria demands sovereignty and policy review for improved ties with Iran

Mohammad al-Jaffal, an advisor for Afro-Asian affairs at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that normalizing relations with Iran requires Tehran to respect Syrian sovereignty and review its past policies. Al-Jaffal emphasized that Syria's current stance is a direct consequence of 14 years of conflict and Iran's support for the previous Assad regime, which contributed to the country's destruction.

Al-Jaffal asserted that the new Syria maintains an open foreign policy but will not serve as a sphere of influence for any nation. He stressed that future relations must be based on mutual respect, national interest, and equality.

These remarks follow comments from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who noted that Iran has not yet established relations with the new Syrian government. Pezeshkian attributed this delay to the impression created by the new administration and expressed hope that Damascus would act based on principles of justice and fairness. Diplomatic ties between the two nations have remained at an unprecedented low since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime on December 8, 2024.
