Syria evaluates Mecca Defense Pact and prioritizes Turkish reconstruction

Syrian Foreign Minister Esad Hasan el-Şeybani, during an official visit to Pakistan, outlined a new foreign policy focused on regional cooperation and reconstruction. He identified Turkey as a vital partner for Syria's rebuilding efforts and announced that Syria is evaluating potential membership in the Mecca Joint Defense Pact, a security agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Regarding bilateral relations, el-Şeybani stated that Syria intends to raise its diplomatic representation in Pakistan to the ambassadorial level and agreed to reactivate a joint ministerial committee and establish a business council. He also set conditions for normalizing ties with Iran, stating that Tehran must acknowledge its actions during the Syrian civil war.

Separately, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack reported that Israeli airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur air base in northern Syria were conducted without prior warning to the United States or Turkey. Barrack noted that while Israel acted on intelligence regarding potential Turkish military presence at the site, Washington had verified such claims were unfounded. The incident has heightened regional tensions between Israel and Turkey.
