Syria expands breast cancer screening in Daraa and Tartus
The Syrian Ministry of Health is expanding breast cancer early detection services in the Daraa and Tartus governorates as part of the October “Pink Month” awareness campaign.
In Daraa, health directorates are providing mammography and ultrasound screenings at hospitals in Daraa, Nawa, and Izraa. These services include surgical assessments and biopsies when necessary. The province recently enhanced its capacity by adding a fourth mammography device to Bosra al-Sham National Hospital in April 2026. Medical staff, including surgeons, obstetricians, and radiologists, are participating in the campaign to conduct comprehensive screenings and refer suspicious cases for specialized treatment following international protocols.
In Tartus, the National Hospital is conducting its annual campaign to promote early detection culture. Surgical clinics receive between 15 and 25 women daily, who are then referred to the radiology department for mammograms or ultrasounds. Medical officials noted that approximately 600 women completed mammograms over the last six months. While services are free during the October campaign, they remain available year-round for nominal fees.
