Syria expects Israel security talks to resume despite lack of trust

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed hope that security negotiations with Israel could resume soon, despite stating that Damascus currently lacks trust in the Israeli government. The talks, which the United States has been attempting to broker for over a year, were previously frozen following the onset of the Iran war.

Direct communication between the two nations was recently severed after an Israeli strike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase. Shaibani emphasized that Syria's primary objective is to halt Israeli military operations within its territory. He urged Israel to seize a ‘historic opportunity’ for diplomacy rather than relying on force.

A previously drafted security arrangement, which was nearly agreed upon earlier this year, included an Israeli withdrawal from territories seized following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The proposal also envisioned the establishment of security zones, including a buffer zone to be patrolled by United Nations forces.
