Syria faces food insecurity following regime collapse

Following the collapse of the Assad regime and the fall of Damascus to rebel forces in late 2024, a new chapter has begun in Syria. While over one million refugees have returned to their homeland from neighboring countries, millions more remain displaced due to destroyed infrastructure, security concerns, and economic instability.

Food insecurity remains a critical issue, with United Nations estimates suggesting approximately 90% of the Syrian population lives below the poverty line and 60% face severe food insecurity. In areas like Eastern Ghouta, which faced long-term sieges, unconventional food sources have become vital. Mushrooms, which can grow in dark, damp, and indoor environments without sunlight, are being utilized as a crucial nutritional resource for those struggling to survive amidst the country's post-war devastation.
