Syria faces surge in infrastructure sabotage and security incidents

Syria has experienced a rapid succession of security incidents and acts of sabotage targeting critical infrastructure. Recent events include a major fire at the Tishreen thermal power station near Damascus caused by a gas pipeline explosion, which disabled three power plants and impacted drinking water networks. Other reported incidents involve attacks on an electricity company employee bus on the Masyaf Bridge in Homs, explosions in ammunition depots, and an attempted assassination of a Ministry of Defense officer in Daraa.

Security experts suggest these are not isolated accidents but a systematic campaign aimed at undermining state authority and demonstrating the government's inability to protect vital services. Potential actors identified include ISIS sleeper cells seeking to rebuild their influence, remnants of the previous regime, and regional intelligence agencies, including Israel, which may seek to prevent Syrian stability and reconstruction. The timing of these attacks coincides with significant economic pressures on the Syrian authorities as they attempt to attract investment and establish strategic energy corridors.
