Syria: IAEA discovers tons of nuclear material at undeclared site

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has discovered several tons of nuclear material at a previously undeclared site in Syria. The discovery follows a proactive notification by Syria’s new government, led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which reported the existence of the material on July 17 as part of the legacy left by the ousted Bashar al-Assad regime.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi confirmed the findings during a press conference in Damascus alongside Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. Grossi noted that the material, which could potentially be misused, will be placed under international safeguards. Technical evaluations by Syrian authorities suggest the material does not pose an immediate danger and will remain in Syrian custody under IAEA supervision.

Inspectors visited two locations, including a site in Deir ez-Zor that had been closed for 18 years. This site was previously the target of an Israeli airstrike in 2007, which the IAEA later assessed was likely a clandestine nuclear reactor built with North Korean assistance. Ongoing excavation and exploration work is being conducted at the Deir ez-Zor site to further investigate the historical nuclear activities in the region.
