Syria implements major education curriculum reforms

Following the removal of the Assad administration, Syria’s Shara administration has introduced comprehensive changes to the national education curriculum. The reforms focus on revising historical narratives regarding the Ottoman Empire, the Arab Revolt, and national identity.

Key historical changes include replacing terms such as ‘Ottoman occupation’ with ‘Ottoman administration’ and removing references to ‘Turkish oppression.’ The 1916 movement led by Sharif Hussein, previously termed the ‘Great Arab Revolt,’ is now described as ‘Hussein bin Ali’s rebellion movement.’ Additionally, the purpose of the war in the East is now framed as ‘removing the Ottomans from the region’ rather than ‘saving people from Turkish oppression.’

The curriculum also shifts ideological focus from Arab nationalism to ‘pride in Islamic civilization.’ Concepts such as ‘serving the nation’ have been replaced with ‘serving religion and the ummah,’ and the term ‘democracy’ in the context of the Four Caliphs has been replaced by ‘shura.’

Geographically, new maps in the curriculum depict Hatay within the borders of Turkey, signaling a departure from previous territorial claims. The Ministry of Education stated these updates aim to reflect the diversity of Syrian society and move away from the ideological content of the previous regime.
