Syria leverages UN Security Council consensus to oppose Israeli incursions
Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Albi, stated that the UN Security Council’s recent affirmation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement represents a significant diplomatic development. This consensus, which includes the five permanent members of the Security Council, emphasizes the continued validity of the agreement and respects the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
Albi noted that Syria is pursuing a political and legal path to mobilize international pressure against Israeli incursions in the south of the country, rather than engaging in new military confrontations. He reported that 45 countries expressed support for Syria within a 24-hour period following movements by Israeli leadership across the border.
The diplomatic efforts aim to isolate Israel and address violations that international bodies, such as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, have suggested could amount to war crimes. Syria intends to use these international stances as political and legal tools to demand respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
