Syria pursues security pact with Israel and new accord with Russia

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has outlined a potential path toward a security agreement with Israel. In a recent interview, Sharaa stated that Syria seeks a security pact involving international pressure to ensure a balanced policy from Israel. He noted that if such an agreement is successful, it could lead to a second phase of discussions regarding comprehensive peace, provided Syria does not relinquish its rights to the occupied Golan. Sharaa also reaffirmed Syria's support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Separately, the Syrian government and Russia have announced a memorandum of understanding regarding Moscow’s military presence in the country. Under the new accord, Syria will assume control of civilian facilities at the Hmeimim airbase and the commercial section of the Tartus port. The military facilities will be converted into joint Russian-Syrian training and qualification centers, a transition expected to be completed within three months. Analysts suggest the deal allows Damascus to reclaim greater sovereignty while enabling Russia to maintain a strategic foothold in the region.
