Syria raises military readiness on Iraq border amid threat concerns

On 4 August, the Syrian armed forces issued an order to increase operational readiness across all service branches, citing fears of possible attacks by Iraqi armed groups along the Syria‑Iraq frontier. Sources from the Syrian Ministry of Defence told the German news agency DPA that the directive does not signal an offensive operation but is a precautionary response to warnings of infiltration or strikes from the Iraqi side.

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights confirmed a buildup of Syrian troops in the town of Al Buqamal and other border zones, noting increased drone activity and new prohibitions on photographing or recording military movements. No official comment has been released by the Syrian defence ministry. Meanwhile, officials in Baghdad have stressed that Iraq will not permit its territory to be used as a launchpad for attacks against neighbouring states.
