Syria reopens embassies in Damascus and Tripoli after 14-year closures
Syria is rapidly restoring diplomatic ties with the international community following the overthrow of the Assad regime in December 2024. Denmark has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus after a 14-year closure. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen attended the ceremony alongside Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. To support the country's recovery, Denmark announced an additional $76 million in aid for stabilization and refugee return efforts. Additionally, the two nations plan to launch direct flights between Copenhagen and Damascus starting September 21.
Simultaneously, Syria has reopened its embassy in Tripoli, Libya, after 14 years. During a visit to Tripoli, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah to discuss bilateral cooperation. The two sides agreed to reactivate the Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee and discussed expanding cooperation in security, trade, and energy. They also reached an agreement to open a Syrian consulate in Benghazi to better serve the Syrian community in Libya.
