Syria reports 212 new HIV diagnoses in 2025
Syria has recorded 212 new HIV diagnoses in 2025, bringing the total number of registered living individuals with the virus to 1,538 since tracking began in 1990.
Health officials stated that the increase does not indicate a sudden epidemiological surge. Instead, the rise is attributed to expanded testing access, improved public health reporting, and the return of citizens who previously received treatment abroad and are now seeking continuous access to antiretroviral medications through the Ministry of Health.
According to World Health Organization data, national HIV reporting rates in Syria remain low, with rates staying below one case per 100,000 residents over the previous five-year window. In 2024, 470 individuals were recorded receiving antiretroviral therapy, while voluntary counseling and testing services reached 8,820 people.
