Syria requests UN protection against Israeli airstrikes
Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, has called on the international community to protect the nation's sovereignty against Israeli military actions. Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Olabi condemned Israeli airstrikes on facilities within Syria, stating these actions extend beyond mere incursions in the south to undermine national security.
Olabi emphasized that the new Syrian leadership is committed to rebuilding international trust and fulfilling global obligations, marking a significant departure from the policies of the ousted regime. He noted that while the previous government obstructed international efforts and facilitated regional instability through chemical weapons use and drug smuggling, the current administration seeks to restore stability and combat terrorism.
As part of this diplomatic shift, Syria is pursuing transparent cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Following a visit from IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Olabi reported that Syria has opened all relevant facilities to the agency and voluntarily disclosed previously undeclared nuclear materials to address inherited nuclear and chemical weapons issues.
