Syria sentences Bashar al-Assad and relatives to death

The Syrian judiciary has sentenced several individuals to death for crimes including intentional homicide. Among those sentenced are former dictator Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and their cousin Atif Najib.

With the exception of Atif Najib, the condemned individuals are currently fugitives. Although notifications have been sent to the countries where they are located requesting their extradition to Syria for the execution of these sentences, it is believed the court rulings may remain unenforced. This is due to the Syrian administration's current lack of political leverage to compel the respective countries to facilitate the handover of the convicts.
