Syria textbook revisions spark public outcry

Recent revisions to school textbooks in Syria have triggered significant criticism on social media. The changes involve more than just text; visual elements have been heavily modified. Reported alterations include adding headscarves to previously unveiled female figures, deleting photographs of women and children, covering statues, and replacing various artworks.

In addition to visual changes, the Ministry of Education has revised instructional units covering political life, civics, democratic participation, local administration, and media. While the Ministry has denied certain allegations, the modifications have sparked a debate regarding the criteria used for curriculum updates and whether the changes aim to remove content from previous administrations or fundamentally reshape the representation of Syrian society.
