Syrian Army begins receiving military equipment from SDG/YPG

Following an agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDG/YPG), a process of transferring military weaponry and equipment to the Syrian army began on September 3–4, 2026.

In Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) alone, 1,170 Kalashnikov-type rifles were reportedly handed over. The transferred inventory includes approximately 30 tanks, over 50 armored vehicles, and nearly 80 Humvee-type vehicles previously provided by the United States. Other equipment includes BTR-type personnel carriers, mortars, field artillery, heavy machine guns, anti-aircraft weapons, and various military trucks.

Syrian defense sources indicate the stockpile consists of U.S.-provided equipment, weapons seized from ISIS, and assets from the former Assad regime. Expert Abdurrahman Dede estimated the value of equipment transferred so far at roughly $200 million. He noted that if the entire inventory is surrendered, the total value could reach approximately $1 billion. Dede also warned that certain groups within the SDG may attempt to sabotage the process, citing reports of hidden weapon depots located in mountainous regions near the borders of Turkey and Iraq.
