Syria investigates death of White Helmets rescuer in police custody

Mohammed Ghumeira, a 29-year-old former White Helmets volunteer, has died following his detention at the Haffeh police station in Syria's Latakia province. Officials and family members report that Ghumeira, who suffered from hemophilia, died from brain and gastrointestinal hemorrhaging after being subjected to physical abuse while in custody.

Ghumeira had been detained for three days following an allegation of theft. His family alleges that security officers ignored warnings regarding his medical condition during the 72-hour period of detention. The death has sparked significant public outrage, leading to protests in Latakia and calls for nationwide demonstrations.

In response, Syria's Interior Minister, Anas Khattab, has ordered the formation of a specialized committee to investigate the circumstances of the death and ensure accountability. Additionally, seven individuals present at the police station during the time of the incident have been detained for questioning. The incident has reignited intense debate regarding the rule of law and the persistence of detention-related abuses in the country's transitional period.
