Wassim al-Assad sentenced to death by Syrian court

A Syrian court in Damascus has sentenced Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of former president Bashar al-Assad, to death for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The verdict, delivered by the Fourth Criminal Court and broadcast on state television, found him guilty of intentional killings involving torture and brutality.

Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan stated that the court found conclusive evidence of Wassim al-Assad's involvement in planning and participating in massacres in the Eastern Ghouta region and the suburb of Mleha. He was also convicted of crimes including extortion, kidnapping, and attacks against civilians, such as a robbery and kidnapping in Jaramana.

Wassim al-Assad, who was captured near the Lebanon-Syria border in June 2025, was a prominent figure in the former regime's paramilitary and criminal networks. While he faced accusations regarding the global Captagon drug trade, the judge noted that sufficient evidence was not found to prove his direct responsibility for drug trafficking. The court also ordered the confiscation of his assets for the state treasury.

This ruling follows recent death sentences handed down in absentia for former president Bashar al-Assad and his brother, Maher al-Assad, as the country's transitional authorities continue to prosecute members of the former ruling family for actions taken during the civil war.
