Syrian Democratic Forces dissolve following integration with Syrian army
Mazloum Abdi, leader of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), announced the dissolution of the group as an independent military force on Tuesday. The decision follows an agreement to integrate SDF fighters into the Syrian army under the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Formed in 2015 with United States support, the SDF was a primary partner in the military campaign that defeated the territorial hold of the Islamic State (ISIS/Daesh) in Syria. The group previously controlled significant portions of northern and northeastern Syria, including oil-rich territories.
The integration process began earlier this year. As part of the transition, Kurdish People's Protection Units had already been incorporated into state forces, with commander Sipan Hamo appointed as deputy minister of defense for eastern regions in March. US special envoy Tom Barrack characterized the move as a diplomatic step toward strengthening Syrian sovereignty through a unified military and government.
