Syrian fugitive Mohamad Agha extradited to Romania after living in UK council housing
Mohamad Agha, a 51‑year‑old Syrian, was convicted in absentia in Romania for an attempted murder committed on 26 August 2020 in Bucium. He struck driver Galea Andrei Calin with a pick‑axe handle, leaving the victim unconscious and requiring 25 days of hospital care. A Romanian court sentenced Agha to four years’ imprisonment.
After fleeing Romania, Agha settled in the United Kingdom, living with his Romanian wife Ramona and their two children in council housing. The family received between £1,600 and £2,000 a month from Universal Credit, and Agha also claimed disability benefits after a back injury ended his work as a lorry driver in Newport, Wales.
