Syrian Parliament votes to abolish Counter-Terrorism Court
The Syrian Parliament has voted unanimously to abolish the Counter-Terrorism Court, an institution established in 2012 during the Bashar al-Assad administration to prosecute political opponents. The legislative move aims to nullify the legal effects of the court's rulings and address the widespread confiscation of property.
Under the new law, the Supreme Judicial Council will form specialized committees to review and overturn unjust sentences. These committees are tasked with returning confiscated assets to their original owners. To facilitate this process, the law grants tax and fee exemptions to individuals reclaiming property that was seized between March 15, 2011, and December 8, 2024.
The decision follows previous actions by the new authorities, including a June 2025 decree by President Ahmed al-Sharaa to dismiss 67 judges associated with the court. The abolition addresses long-standing international criticism; the United Nations Human Rights Committee had previously raised concerns regarding the court's lack of independence and its role in arbitrary detentions and ill-treatment.
