Syria uncovers $28 million corruption in Deir ez-Zor oil sector

The Central Inspection and Control Authority in Syria has uncovered significant corruption and mismanagement within the oil sector in Deir ez-Zor province. Preliminary investigations estimate the total damage to public funds at approximately $28 million.

Of this amount, roughly $8 million is attributed to irregularities in oil production, maintenance, contracting, and management within the Deir ez-Zor fields. An additional $20 million in losses was identified stemming from price discrepancies in crude oil transport contracts between the Central Region administration and transport companies.

In response to the three-month investigation, authorities have suspended nine officials—including field managers, transport supervisors, and engineers—and referred them to the judiciary. The authority has also moved to terminate contracts with several companies and contractors due to breaches of integrity and performance failures, while recommending the seizure of assets belonging to those involved.

The Syrian Petroleum Company has expressed full support for the oversight process, stating it is providing all necessary documentation and facilities to the inspectors. The company emphasized that it is working to strengthen internal controls and review contracting and maintenance procedures to prevent future corruption.
